South Africa moves to adjusted Level 3 lockdown amid rapid rise in COVID-19 cases

South Africa has moved from Level 1 to an adjusted Level 3 lockdown. It came into force at midnight, after an announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa. Under these new restrictions, the sale and public consumption of alcohol will be prohibited. All indoor and outdoor gatherings, with the exception of funerals will no longer be allowed. The President has also announced the closure of all beaches, dams, lakes, rivers, public parks and public swimming pools in hotspot areas. The new restrictions will remain in force until they are reviewed on 15 January 2021.
